A lifestyle blog by Bars + Crafts founder Alissa KRG
I'm Alissa, the founder of Bars + Crafts ® and the voice behind your new favorite blog <--- yes, this one.
If you know me, you may think I'm bubbly and happy all the time. Or maybe you think I'm an evil biatch and my self perspective is just way off. But either way, the truth is, I'm not always in a good mood.
In fact, it takes a lot of work for me to stay balanced and positive, especially during dark-before-work-ends season. I can feel a lump forming in my throat at the thought.
But guess what? Winter can be super fun! JK, it's seriously the worst except if you're a skier and I've only skied like 4 times in my life. I actually used to drop my skis on the chair lift just so I could get a ride down the mountain on the snow mobile.
But anyway, this winter let's do it differently. Let's find ways to feel inspired and excited even when we can't feel our effing faces.
Here are 5 ways to keep your cool — slash your warmth — this winter.
Eye roll, right? Everyone knows exercise gives you endorphins and endorphins make you happy... And whatever the rest of that Legally Blonde quote is. But I'm not just suggesting you get a good sweat in a few times a week.
I'm suggesting you switch up your exercise routine entirely. Last winter, instead of going for a boring treadmill run, pretending to do crunches, and then heading on home like I usually did, I decided to try new classes at NYC studios and at my stunning, state of the art gym, New York Sports Club. Having kickboxing in the dungeon, I mean, downstairs studio, each week, not only taught me how to punch the shit out of the air, but it also made me excited to work out.
Using new muscles naturally boosted my mood so much more than my same-old runs had been doing. Our brains love newness! Try switching your exercise routine this winter, whether it's joining ClassPass, changing gyms, or trying out a new yoga studio. I've been LOVING the Skyfit app to inspire my workouts too...and this isn't even a sponsored post! (But you better believe I will try to make it one.) You are a sweaty, endorphin-filled machine...now get moving!
Make Dinner Into an Event
I mean, don't we always make meals into dramatic events? Yes, yes we do. But what I'd like you to try during these hibernation months, is labeling your dinner ahead of time. And I'm not talking about writing your name on it like you have to do at work so Sneaky Suzie doesn't steal your kale salad again.
Rather, label dinner one night a week as "Zoodle Night," "Taco Tuesday," or "Loaded Baked Potato Bar." Go wild and do a "Make Your Own Pizza Night" with a whole counter of toppings. Making your third meal of the day into something special will give you something to look forward to all day.
Watch The Bachelor With Friends
My friends and I get together every Monday night in the winter from 6pm-3am because the Bachelor is so freakin' long. JK, it's only two hours, but those two hours basically make the week. We eat salmon and brussel sprouts and drink Yogi tea. Sometimes we even have dark chocolate, ya know, if we're feeling wild. But if you're not complete losers, you can do the same thing with some takeout food and — dare you on a Monday?! — a bottle (or three) of wine.
Even if you don't watch The Bachelor (you can just excuse yourself from this post, thanks), you can still make this a winter custom with friends for a different weekly show. Or perhaps make it a routine with your significant other or yourself! As much as our brains like newness, they also like routine. And if routine means seeing Chris Harrison facilitate rose ceremonies each week, I'm in.
Some Other Inspo:
- Eat healthy as much as you can. Comfort food is comforting, but a natural buzz from eating nutritious foods is even more so.
- Make plans. Make dinner reservations with friends, go on a weekend trip, plan a cozy Harry Potter marathon day. Whatever it is, get some activities in your calendar.
- Get a new sweater. Find the closest thing to an actual blanket and live in it the whole season. There's no cozier feeling than cocooning yourself in a giant sweater blanket at your office or in your living room.
- Do winter sports (LOL see above re: skiing).
- Plan a Bars + Crafts event! Shameless plug: book an event with us for a creative night out.
This is our season to shine, guys! And I don't mean that shiny Vicks vapor rub look...let's enjoy ourselves this winter, one chilly, beautiful moment at a time.
